Coed Basketball Rules

Roster

Maximum roster size: 16
Minimum roster size: 4

Coed teams consist of three women and two men, or three men and two women. A team may play with as few as four players. However, at no time may the number of male players on the court exceed the number of female players by more than one player.

Former Hope Basketball Players

All former players must be marked on the team's roster as JV or Varsity.

  • Teams with multiple former Hope players, or any former varsity players must sign up for the more competitive league
  • Teams may sign up for less competitive as long as they have no more than one former JV player on their team

No more than two former Hope players may be on the court at a time (all other players must be non-former Hope players). However, there may be three former Hope players on the court if all three played JV basketball at Hope. If any of the players played Varsity, the total number on the court cannot exceed two. Captains must mark all former players on the roster and discuss this rule before each game so that it is clear.

Game Play

  • Men cannot block women's shots at any time. It is considered a block if the defender contacts the ball. If a block is made, the basket counts.
  • All steals are legal
  • A men's basketball will be used
  • Free substitutions can be made with no gain of an unfair advantage
  • Jump balls are handled by alternating the ball to teams at the sideline

The basic rules are those set forth in the NCAA basketball rule book. Rule adjustments are such:

  • Duration of the game: Two 20 minute halves, running time with stopped clock during the last two minutes of the last half on dead balls
    • Half time: Five minute duration
  • Initial possession: A coin flip or rock/paper/scissors will determine who has possession to start the game (and in overtime)
  • Time outs: A single one minute timeout permitted per half (not accumulative)
    • One 30-second time out is permitted in the overtime period (not sudden-death)
  • Overtime: The first team to five points wins. You do not need to win by a certain amount of points.
    • A coin flip or rock/paper/scissors will determine initial possession

Fouls

Personal fouls

Six personal fouls equals disqualification. When personal fouls are issued:

  • Against a shooter who:
    • Makes the shot: the basket is counted and defense gets possession under the basket
    • Misses the shot: the shooter gets possession at mid-court
  • Against a non-shooter: the ball is awarded to offended team at nearest sideline

During the last two minutes of the last half of regulation time, all fouls will be one-and-one only if no points were scored on the foul.

Technical fouls

Two technical fouls remove a player or coach from the gym.

  • Automatic two points plus ball to the offended team at mid-court
  • If a foul is flagrant, the offender(s) will be ejected from the game

If you have a protest, email intramurals@hope.edu or contact the intramural director.
